Julia spoke at the Blue Cities 2025 Conference in Mississauga, Ontario on May 14, as an invited panelist focused on ‘Securing Canada’s water future: Strategies for availability and demand management’. The panel covered a range of topics, from balancing immediate vs long-term needs and resilience, to equity, to key considerations for water management and supply strategies. Julia emphasized a water resilience perspective that focuses on equity and encourages relationship- and empathy-building. Blue Cities is an annual conference that brings together strategic decision makers in the municipal water sector across Canada to address key issues. This year’s focus was on strategic management of risk in uncertain times.
Julia is in Quebec this week to share the current and proposed future research directions of the empathy for sustainability project. She’s participating in the ResNet annual meeting, where Julia is a co-lead of a theme focused on ecosystem services governance and decision support tools. The meeting brings together social and natural science researchers from across Canada.

A bit of a metaphor for the work still to do on empathy for sustainability – we are just at the start of the work / climb!
[31 July 2024] The lab headed out into nature for a hike! Gillian, Julia, and Jen spent the morning in the Niagara Glen, one of our favourite local hiking spots! We soaked in the beauty of the place and spent some time next to the Niagara River. We look forward to another opportunity to connect with nature in the fall.
Moss, rocks and awesome people.
Pretty view.
Obligatory selfie, smile!
